Surfing Matanivusi
|

|
On the south coast of Fiji's main island, Vitu
Levu, Matanivusi resort is accessible to year round surf. The northern
swell season, from December to early April, is when three local
breaks are at their best. Winds are usually light, with often glassy
conditions, hot weather and afternoon showers.
Shifties, on the outside point
of the reef, picks up the most swell and works great with a northerly
wind on all tides. It's a thick and powerful right hander that takes
off in deep water, so it's not quite as hairy as it looks! |
|
 |
On a bigger swell, J's
is a very fast, hollow right - best with a north wind and high tide.
Vananiu is another fast, hollow,
wedging right hander that gives a long ride at high tide. These
are all reef breaks, recommended for experienced surfers only.
Frigates, 20km offshore from
the resort, is world-class left-hander, very consistent and sometimes
huge. .
