Macaronis Resort
Macaronis Resort was badly damaged in the October 2010 tsunami, but
Macaronis is bouncing back!
In partnership with local villagers, Macaronis has done a massive clean up of the site, and
started renovations. The plan is to re-develop the main building and be ready to take guests by June 2011. See below for details and contact Atoll Travel for bookings. |

Surfing Macaronis |
 |
Macaronis Resort sits in a secluded
location on an island in the Mentawais archipelago, in the Indian
Ocean off the coast of Sumatra. The resort is on a peninsula known
locally as Tanjung Si Nyai, overlooking a tropical lagoon. On the
south side, facing the ocean, is Macaronis Bay.
The local break, just 5 minutes away, is Macaronis (or 'Maccas'). It's the only wave in the Mentawais where regional Government regulations mean no crowded surf. The resort guests plus a maximum of two charter boats at a time can use the fixed moorings at the break.
|
|
 |
Macaronis is a perfectly shaped left-hand barrel that works on all tides, on swells from 2 to 8 feet plus. It's amazingly consistent, and rated as one of the world's funnest waves.
Nearby, Macca's Right is a long mellow wave that works with northerly winds on a medium to high tide. A 10 minute speedboat ride to the north, Silabu Left,
is usually an easy surf, but it's seriously challenging on a big swell.
|
|
 |
Around 40 minutes south of the resort is Greenbush, a demanding, hollow left hander -
very photogenic, but not for the faint-hearted. It works best on a big high tide around April and May.
Also in range is Bat Cave, 45 minutes away by speedboat. It's a long, mellow right-hand point break off an uninhabited island. This is an excellent day trip for non-surfers to picnic and go beachcombing.

 |
Macaronis main building (left) is a circular, three-story structure with great views of the bay and the lagoon. It survived the tsunami with limited damage and the plan is to renovate it to provide 16 air-conditioned rooms on the second floor, each with its own bathroom and balcony.
The bar and restaurant area are being remodelled with the same tropical ambience and fun atmosphere that guests have enjoyed so much. The office and reception area will be in a separate new building (right). |
 |
|
The restaurant will provide daily buffet breakfast, lunch
and dinner with flexible meal times to suit the needs of surfers, and a-la-carte
dining every evening.
An Information Board in the bar
provides swell and weather forecasts, and information about speedboat
tours and their surfing schedules. There's also Ding Repair
for damaged surfboards, and a stock of boards is available for hire. |
 |
 |
Additional Activities include
fishing in the lagoon (the resort chefs will prepare your catch at no charge),
game fishing, canoeing and snorkeling. Guided
Tours of Silabu and Betamonga villages give guests an opportunity
to meet and trade with the locals and gain an appreciation of their
culture. Guests may also rent a motorbike and, with
an experienced guide, explore the back tracks of North Pagai Island
and visit various other remote villages. |

Macaronis Resort Packages
|
| Macaronis Resort will be making repairs and improvements from November 2010. Bookings are available for surf trips from June for the 2011 surf season.
Generally, guests start their holiday on a Tuesday, flying in from Kuala Lumpur or Jakarta to Padang International Airport (on the Indonesian island of Sumatra ). Guests are met at the airport by Macaronis Resort staff, transfer by mini-bus to Bungus Harbor and board the Ambu Ambu ferry for a 4pm departure. Accommodation on the ferry is either the air-conditioned VIP lounge, or a private two or four berth cabin. The ferry arrives in the town of Sikakap, in the Mentawai islands, at 7.30am Wednesday. Guests then board a Macaronis Resort boat for transfer to the resort. We arrive at Macaronis in time to check in, have lunch, and hit the surf for an afternoon session.
Departing guests transfer to Sikakap by the resort's own boat on Wednesday, and board the Ambu Ambu ferry for a 5pm departure, arriving in Padang early Thursday morning to then transfer to the airport for onward flights.
