The islands of Nias and the Mentawai region are well known for awesome waves and powerful Indian Ocean swells. The surf season runs from February to mid-November, with less demanding conditions at the start and end of this period. To find the lesser known breaks, you’ll need a live-aboard boat with the range and power to get you there, and a skipper with an intimate knowledge of the region's myriad reefs and islands. A small, fast zodiac dinghy or jet-ski is invaluable to check out breaks and get surfers quickly to shallow reefs.

Two 1,100hp Man diesel engines give MV Midas a comfortable 12-knot cruising speed, and can power the boat to an impressive 26 knots if required. The tender is an Inflatable 14” dingy with 40HP outboard - ideal for fast surf access. There's also a jet ski for scouting the waves, tow-ins, photography and fun (extra charges may apply for jet ski use.) A selection of snorkelling and fishing equipment is also available for your use - our chef can prepare your catch for the night's dinner. |

Atoll Travel
clients are met personally at Padang Airport and a private van takes
them directly to the boat. Groups are encouraged to discuss their
surfing abilities and goals with the skipper, who will plan the
perfect itinerary in accordance with their wishes and the prevailing
conditions. Most groups start with some sessions in the nearby breaks
of the Mentawai islands, then move out to find more remote waves,
taking advantage of the skipper’s extensive experience of
currents, swells, tides and winds At the end of the trip, clients are transferred
directly from the boat to the airport, or to on-shore accommodation
if they want to do more traveling or sightseeing in the area. Atoll
Travel packages include airfares via Singapore with Singapore Airlines/Garuda
or via Kuala Lumpur with Malaysian Airlines to Padang, all transfers,
11 nights accommodation on board, surf guide, snorkeling and fishing
gear, all meals, soft drinks, bottled water and a case of beer.
Additional beers, wines and cocktails can be purchased on board
at reasonable prices. Fuel surcharges apply for extended trips north
to Telos and Nias. |
