Now you can surf the Mentawais'
epic waves, staying in comfort at a quality surf resort. Macaronis offers
all the facilities of a tropical resort with the famous Macaronis barrel just
minutes away. Other breaks are accessed on two and three day excursions aboard
Indies Explorer, the resort's own ketch.
Surfing Macaronis
Macaronis Resort sits in a secluded location on an island in the Mentawais archipelago,
in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Sumatra. The resort is on a peninsula known
locally as Tanjung Si Nyai, overlooking a tropical lagoon. On the south side,
facing the ocean, is Macaronis Bay.
Two local breaks are only minutes from the
resort. Macaronis (or 'Maccas') is a perfectly
shaped left-hand barrel that works on all tides, and can be surfed on swells
from two to eight feet plus. Nearby, Macca's Right is a long
mellow wave that works with northerly winds on a medium to high tide. Boats
to these, and Silabu Left, are included.
Other breaks are accessible on two-three day
excursions on board the 115 ft ketch Indies Explorer. Rag's Left is a long barreling wave that turns
on during large southwest swells. When swell direction, tide and wind are all
working, you'll start from an outside bowl, then zip down to a large, long open
face. Nearby Rag's Right is best at high tide when strong swells
generate thick, hollow tubes (not for beginners!). An excellent option in smaller
swells is Thunders, a very consistent break, surfable on all
tides.
 |
Hollow Trees (HTs
or Lance's Right), a fast, demanding, barreling right-hander;
and Lance's Left, a long lefthander that's consistent
and more user-friendly, with racy walls and occasional barrel sections.
On the opposite side of the bay, Bintangs is a barreling,
fun right-hander.

Your room will be one of eight villas perched above a lagoon.
Each accommodates up to four guests and offers water views, air conditioning,
ceiling fan, spa bath, bar fridge, stereo system and satellite TV with
in-house movies/surf channel (see the Macaronis wave live!!). The interior
of each villa features tasteful Asian furnishings and local hardwood finishes.
The open plan design allows a choice of open doors and windows for natural

| French doors lead to a balcony with water views
by day and a cool place to relax in the evening. A staircase from the
balcony to the lagoon allows guests to swim directly from their veranda
or be picked up or dropped off by boat, before and after each days surfing. |

Flexible meal times suit the needs of surfers, and a-la-carte dining is

tours and their surfing schedules. There's an Internet Cafe
on the top floor of the restaurant building, plus satellite phone, safety
deposit boxes and a money changing service at the front office.
