The islands of Nias and the Mentawai region are well known for awesome waves and powerful Indian Ocean swells. To find the lesser known breaks, you’ll need a live-aboard boat with the range and power to get you there, and a skipper with an intimate knowledge of the myriad reefs and islands of the region.
The best surf charter boats have a small, fast zodiac or jet-ski to check out breaks quickly, and get surfers to reefs in shallow water. And the very best boats offer luxury, air-conditioned accommodation on board, with quality cuisine, entertainment systems and facilities to video and view each day’s surf adventures.

Atoll Travel clients are met personally at Padang Airport and a private van takes them directly to the boat. Groups are encouraged to discuss their surfing abilities and goals with the skipper, who will plan the perfect itinerary in accordance with their wishes and the prevailing conditions. Most groups start with some sessions in the nearby breaks of the Mentawai islands, then move out to find more remote waves, taking advantage of the skipper’s extensive experience of currents, swells, tides and winds.


At the end of the trip, clients are transferred directly from the boat to the airport, or to on-shore accommodation if they want to do more traveling or sightseeing in the area. Atoll Travel packages include airfares via Singapore with Singapore Airlines/Garuda or via Kuala Lumpur with Malaysian Airlines to Padang, all transfers, 11 nights accommodation on board, all meals, a case of beer, surf guide, snorkeling and fishing gear.
About MV Midas «
This 72ft motor yacht is one of the most comfortable boats cruising the Mentawais. Recently refitted, it accommodates 10 passengers in four wood-panelled, air-conditioned cabins, each with its own private en-suite bathroom. The sumptuous state-rooms feature double or queen sized beds, fine linen and tasteful furnishings – this is real class.

Living areas include a spacious, fully carpeted, air-conditioned saloon with a complete entertainment system, BOSE speakers, CD player, iPod connection, huge flat-screen TV, X-box, DVD and video editing facility. In addition there is a comfortable, air-conditioned lounge on the fly-bridge, outdoor viewing space on the fly-deck, a shady relaxation area on the after-deck and a spot for sunbaking on the fore-deck.
Our gourmet chef prepares a full range of Asian and European dishes featuring plenty of fresh seafood and a touch of French influence. A case of beer per person is included in the standard package, along with soft drinks, bottled water and snacks. Additional beers, wines and cocktails can be purchased on board at reasonable prices.
Two 1,100hp Man diesel engines give MV <em>Midas</em> a comfortable 12-knot cruising speed, and can power the boat to an impressive 26 knots if required. In addition, there’s a new Yamaha 110hp, three-person jet ski available for fast surf access, photo shoots and just plain fun. A selection of snorkelling and fishing equipment is also available for your use - our chef can prepare your catch for the night's dinner.
