Sri Lanka's little-developed southwest coast is a wonderful base for relaxing by the sea and surfing the mellow breaks that are dotted along the coast from Hikkaduwa to Ahangama and Midigama. Several places provide comfortable, economical accommodation.

Southwest Coast Surf
The southwest coast surf is best from October to March - the months when the east coast isn't working.
The best surf breaks are between Hikkaduwa and Midigama, and this stretch of coast has good places to relax away from the crowds. There's a fair variety of point and reef breaks, both left and right - mostly good, fun waves but some can turn on barrels when the swell is up.

Easy Beach Guesthouse «
The name says it all - this delightful guesthouse is right on the beach at Ahangama, with two good surf points in easy reach. Run by a European couple, it has a pretty garden, good size double rooms, and excellent meals, all included in the rates. Day trips for surfing and sightseeing are easily arranged.

Villa Gaetano «
Another inexpensive option, Villa Gaetano at Midigama, has European standard rooms with hot and cold water, ceiling fan and sea views. The attractive dining/lounge area has satellite TV and games. Breakfast is included, bicycles are available for rent, or an air-conditioned car with driver and guide for longer excursions.

Amaya Reef Hotel «
This comfortable hotel is right on the beach at Hikkaduwa and has 54 modern air-conditioned rooms with telephone, private bathroom, balcony and sea view. The free form swimming pool looks over the beach, and there's a garden bar, TV lounge, and souvenir shop. The beachfront restaurant serves a wide choice of Asian and European dishes, BBQ and Sri Lankan specialties. As well as surfing and relaxing on the beach, the hotel can arrange fishing and sightseeing trips, or diving with a PADI-qualified instructor.
