Tonga has surf all year with two surf seasons;
South Swells, from April to October, originate in the southern winter low pressure systems off New Zealand. Winter temperatures range from 21 C to 26 C. Generally the offshore south-east trade winds are predominant particularly in the early and later months of winter, making for perfect conditions.
In the south-swell season, a series of five left handers are within a ten minute walk and short paddle from the falés of Ha'atafu Beach Resort - The Pass, Motels, Corners, The Bowl, and Fishtraps.
North Swells, from November to March, arrive from the North Pacific or from the regional tropical cyclones common in the months of the southern summer. Summer temperature range from 24 C to 30 C.
January to March is the wet season, with more humid weather and heavy tropical downpours interspersed with fine sunny conditions. East to south-east trade winds prevail in summer, but can vary with passing storms. In this season, four right handers and a left are easily accessible from Ha'atafu Beach. There are also some top quality reef breaks accessible by boat and normally at least one of these will have offshore winds on any day.
